KUAOTUNU

Kuaotunu, located 17km north of Whitianga, is a small village and beach resort.

The village was once a thriving gold mining town, with over 1,000 residents. The township boasted a large hotel and a number of retail outlets. Drawn to the area by the gold, prospectors burrowed into the hills and created a network of mineshafts, many of which exist today. Today the community has a fire station, general store, a café and gallery and one of the Coromandel’s most famous pizza restaurants. Many locals and holidaymakers gather around a barrista coffee and enjoy lengthy conversation and debate.

Kuaotunu has clean, safe, white-sand beaches with excellent facilities for water sports. Horses riding, tramping and trekking are popular land-based activities. The infamous Black Jack road climbs out of Kuaotunu heading towards Otama Beach and Opito Bay.
