Primary school teachers to strike on 15 August

Wednesday 15 August will see primary school teachers across New Zealand go on strike. This will result in some school closures for the day. In Mercury Bay, both Whenuakite School (pictured) and Te Rerenga School will be closed.

Principals and teachers at primary schools are pushing for more support for themselves and the students they work with, as well as higher pay. Many classrooms are over-populated and students are not currently receiving the one-on-one time they need and deserve. There also seems to be a shortage of teachers and the popular reasoning behind this is that remuneration in the industry is not attractive enough.

Both Whenuakite School and Te Rerenga School have already given warning to the parents and caregivers of their students that they will be closed during the strike.

Mercury Bay Area School will remain open on 15 August. Principal John Wright says, “Being an Area School, our staff are covered under a separate collective agreement [the Area School Teachers' Collective Agreement], so are not involved in this industrial action. Our school will be open as usual [during the strike].”

With the squad that was announced last month, do you believe the All Blacks have what it takes to win the 2019 Rugby World Cup?
