Road closures to vehicle traffic on the way due to Whitianga Town Centre upgrade

Road closures to vehicle traffic on the way due to Whitianga Town Centre upgrade

Physical work on the development of the Whitianga Town Centre upgrade will start Wednesday 4 April, directly after Easter long weekend.

Dempsey Wood Civil Ltd has been contracted by TCDC to do the construction of Stage One, Albert St (from Hannan Rd to Campbell St) including a plaza on Taylor's Mistake. The project is being broken down into three phases.

·         Phase 1 - Monk Street to Lee St

·         Phase 2 - Hannan Road to Monk Street

·         Phase 3 – Blacksmith Lane/Lee St to Campbell Street

The programme of works will be completed by December 2018 and during regular construction hours, 7am - 7pm, from Monday to Saturday. On occasions where night work is required, the community will be notified in advance.

During some periods of construction, portions of Albert Street will be closed to vehicle traffic to complete works ranging from wastewater pipe replacements, footpath upgrades and carriageway replacement. Businesses are able to remain open as pedestrian walkways will be kept open for foot traffic and mobility impaired users. Residents and businesses will continue to be notified of upcoming road closures in advance with regular updates through TCDC's communication channels and in the Mercury Bay Informer newspaper.

Between Monday 26 March and Tuesday 3 April 2018 Dempsey Wood will be establishing its work site, with a container and fence going up on a small part of Taylor's Mistake to hold equipment. This will not affect pedestrian and boat trailer access or Easter traffic. The old fire station building on Monk St will be the site office for the duration of the development.

Albert Street, from Monk St to Lee St, will be closed to vehicle traffic with detours in place to direct motorists while pedestrian access will remain available. The road closure and detour is scheduled to be in place until 18 July 2018.

Then actual physical construction will commence Wednesday 4 April.

Phase two will see Albert St, between Hannan Rd to Monk St closed to vehicle traffic from 7 June - 29 August 2018.

Phase three will see Albert St, from Blacksmith Lane/Lee St to Campbell St closed to vehicle traffic from 8 August - 29 November 2018.

The TCDC project team, along with the Mercury Bay Business Association, have been around the town centre advising businesses and residents in advance about the road closures.

A separate piece of work currently going on is repairs and maintenance to the men's toilet on Blacksmith Lane, behind the Information Centre. The men's toilet is closed until Monday 23 April for repairs and maintenance to the floor.

Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and thanks you for your cooperation. Their project page will be updated regularly at www.tcdc.govt.nz/whiticentreupgrade.
