Who will be the Mercury Bay Art Escape’s People’s Choice?

30 Mar 2021

Which artist will be named the People’s Choice of the 2021 Mercury Bay Art Escape? That is being voted on by visitors to the Showcase Exhibition at Hot Waves Café in Hot Water Beach, where an artwork from each of the Art Escape’s Open Studios participants and member artists is on display.

The exhibition has been running since the Open Studios began in early March and continues until early May. It was extended after previous COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Mercury Bay Art Escape chair and Kuaotunu photographer, Ian Preece, says a third weekend of Open Studios has been added for Easter Weekend. “We’re expecting a lot of visitors in the eastern Coromandel over the long weekend,” he says. “We are grateful that many of our artists are available to open their studios over Easter and that visitors will have the opportunity to see work from talented locals at the Showcase Exhibition right through until the end of the upcoming school holidays.”

Ian says artists reported a great turnout and excellent feedback during the Open Studios that was held during the first two weekends of March.

The third weekend of Open Studios is on Saturday 3 and Sunday, 4 April from 10am to 4pm. Visit mercurybay-artescape.com/studios-open-easter-2021 for a list of artists opening their studios. The Open Studios are a free event. You can download a map to plan your visit  at mercurybay-artescape.com/artists-open-studio.

The Mercury Bay Art Escape Open Studios are an outstanding opportunity for the public to meet the participating artists and see inside their creative spaces. Discover what inspires artists, see their works in progress and buy an original piece directly from its maker.

Artists opening their studios are in and around Tairua, Coroglen, Whenuakite, Hot Water Beach, Hahei, Cooks Beach, Whitianga, Opito Bay, Kuaotunu and Rings Beach. The artists represent a rich and eclectic mix of the arts and include flax weavers, furniture makers, jewellers, glass and mosaic artists, painters, photographers, potters, printmakers, sculptors, and woodworkers.
