New Whitianga Marina fuel dock open

The new fuel dock at the Whitianga Marina was opened on Saturday morning last week. The low-key event was attended by approximately 20 people, including representatives from Bellingham Marine and Carlyon Civil, the contractors responsible for construction of the facility.

In welcoming everyone present, Calum McGillivray, chair of the Whitianga Marina Society, said the fuel dock was necessitated by the growth of Whitianga and the wider Mercury Bay area. “We now have five refuelling points, and sell both diesel and petrol,” he said. “Hopefully we won’t see a lot of queueing up for fuel as we’ve seen before with our previous, much smaller, fuel dock.”

As Calum was talking, and purely coincidentally, the first boat pulled in to fill up.

Follow Calum’s welcome, Joe Davis of Ngati Hei blessed the new facility with a karakia. That paved the way for two former Marina Society chairs, Brian Parker and Kevin Rintoul, to cut the ribbon, smash, in true maritime fashion, a bottle of sparkling wine against one of the fuel dock pontoons and formally declare the facility open for business.
