A Love of Football
Sam Chamberlain is very much a role model for the younger ones in the Mercury Bay Football Club even though she is quite new to the Club. The Informer asked Sam some questions about her playing and her involvement in Football.
Q: What do you like about football?
I just love everything about football. I’ve played since I was 4 years old. I’ve tried a lot of other sports but football is just the best.
Q: What is your best skill in the game? Keeping the team connected with controlled and incisive play especially to the strikers?
Q: What do you think about the chance to win tickets to the World Cup?
We have a ticket and I would love to win. It would be an amazing experience for my family and me.
Q: What do you like about MBFC
It’s been such great coaching from Shane. He has transformed the team over this season. We are so lucky to have him to coach our team. He also managed to get us all new gear. The club has really supported all the girls in the team and given us great opportunities.
Q: What do you think MBFC should buy/set up if its gets some money from this fundraising?
New girls football shorts and training jackets so we can train in all conditions.
A word from Shane Comber, the coach who has been involved in football as a player for 45 years and as a coach for 25 years. He has worked in conjuction with Former All White Coach Ricki Herberts Academy. He is the coach of Sam’s team and the Club’s Development lead. He brings a lot of experience and commitment. Through Football contacts, we have managed to have Sam involved in the Women’s World Cup Launch at Waikato Stadium. Getting to play at the Stadium with former and current New Zealand and Waikato Representatives, was a great experience for Sam. Through contacts with the Ole Football Academy in Wellington, I was able to get one of our up and coming Junior Boys, Ben Collins, into the last July Camp of the Ole Football Academy in Wellington. Ole is New Zealand’s Premier Football Academy (has produced the majority of current All Whites). Ben rubbed shoulders and competed well with the very best up and coming players in the country. Ben, like Sam, has genuine potential that can be realised with these types of opportunities. Ben is a Year 8 player, playing in the Junior Boys High School League. Shane Comber With the Men’s World Cup in November/ December and Women’s World Cup here in NZ/AU next year, Football will be top of mind for many. We are proud of our Mercury Bay Football Club.
