Clean Up Week coming
Buffalo Beach Reserve Saturday, 16 SEPT 9.30am to 12.00pm

Keep New Zealand Beautiful is once again asking Kiwis to 'Do the Right Thing' and come together to make a collective difference by getting involved in this year's Clean Up Week, which will take place from 16-22 September.
Clean Up Week is New Zealand's largest movement against litter. This nationwide initiative focuses the community's attention on how much litter is polluting our environment, with volunteers last year helping to remove over 655 tonnes of litter nationwide, across an area equivalent to 5,751 rugby fields.
As part of the week-long event, Wāhi Tukurua/ Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre will be hosting a community cleanup event on Saturday, 16 September at 9:30 - 12.00pm. Everyone is welcome and it’s easy to join in. Register your interest on facebook/ Wāhi Tukurua or show up on the day at Buffalo Beach Reserve.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful CEO Heather Saunderson says, “Litter as a problem can seem small when you come across a piece here and there walking through your local neighbourhood, but collectively it’s a huge issue nationally, not only to our environment, but also to biodiversity, our own health and climate future. We’re encouraging families, schools, businesses, community and youth groups, or even just individuals to 'Be a Tidy Kiwi' and ‘Do the Right Thing’, get together, get involved and make a difference in their local community.”
Saunderson says this year the organization is pushing for all participants to take a climate conscious approach to Clean Up Week by encouraging them to organize their own reusable and sustainable clean up kits using everyday items such as buckets and gardening gloves.
It is great to see TCDC, Waste Management and Enviro NZ getting onboard with this event by offering to dispose of the rubbish collected for free.
To join Wāhi Tukurua at this clean up event and help protect our local environment, or if you have questions or want to learn more, contact our local organizer, Tiffany at hello@wahitukurua.co.nz We have some reusable gloves and bags available, but if you have these bring them along for the event.
