Eight years of Pink eventsat Kūaotunu.

It was the eighth year for this event in Kuaotunu which started with breakfast in 2016 and continued all the way through Covid due to the fortunate timing that the event was not during Lockdown. Always organised by organised by Carol Blair with the support of Jose Kakebeeke and group of helpers; it is much more than an opportunity to raise funds for breast cancer though many of the women who came have experienced this cancer first hand or have family members who have.

“This is a great opportunity for people to catch up with others in their community, enjoy conversation, while supporting a cause that is close to so many people’s hearts,” says Carol. This year’s event was attended by 40 people from Kuaotunu and the surrounding communities of Otama, Opito, and Whitianga. The funds raised to support the work of the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ came to $2,184 from the raffles, those who took part in the silent auction and purchases from the market table of produce and baking all made by the local women. In all the touches at Carol’s home, there are signs of going the extra mile to make this event very memorable and enjoyable. People feel at home but are also treated like honoured guests.

“Many thanks go to those businesses who provided items for our raffles,” says Carol, “In particular, The Kuaotunu Store, Countdown Whitianga, Luke’s Kitchen, and the generous people who donated items for the silent auction.” Many who attend Carol’s home for this pink event have come along every year since she started it. Carol was very thankful to those who attended, particularly as there was a tree across SH 25 just before Kuaotunu, a half hour before the event.

“Three things make it such a good time for everyone; meeting one another and catching up; enjoying the sumptuous baking done by some of our very skilled ladies; and thirdly, knowing you are supporting a great cause. When we started it was a pink breakfast, but it has evolved to an afternoon event which seems to suit people more. We are more relaxed as no one has to get kids off to school or rush to start work. Early morning was more difficult. I’m grateful to everyone who makes the effort to attend and wearing that extra touch of pink reminds us of why we have come but also adds a cheeriness. We will be here next year,” says Carol smiling.
