The Ace Heavy Haulage Southern Bluefin Competition being run out of the Tairua Pauanui Sport Fishing Club wrapped up on the 26th August and concluded with prize giving at the clubrooms that evening. First place in the Southern Bluefin section was Glynn Jones with a nice fish of 44.95kg caught on the boat Tale Chaser. The heaviest Albacore of 3.495kg was caught by Allan Winter on the boat The Kraken. The last man standing prize, of which everyone who tagged and released a Southern Bluefin went into a draw, went to Mark Robinson. This was a very well-deserved prize given the effort Mark put into organising the competition and the hundreds of miles he did at sea chasing what were quite elusive Southern Bluefin Tuna this winter season.

Snapper have been patchy during August, and you either got onto them or you didn't! Those most successful anglers were generally fishing the deeper water with softbaits, sliders, or small flea jigs. Those lucky enough to get a catch of snapper will have noted the excellent condition they are in for this time of the year.

There have also been some good reports of squid being caught on the east coast. The best time to target these is just on dark so get the beanie and head torch on and get out onto your favourite rocky outcrop, have a couple of casts with a squid jig, and you might just be surprised what you bring in.
