Snapper fishing is very good at the moment with plenty of fish being caught and they’re all in excellent condition. “While the popular spots around the Mercury Islands, Centre Island and Ohinau are producing well, anglers are also doing well with long lines off Cooks Beach and Wharekaho,” says Alan Proctor, manager of the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club (MBGFC). “There are also a few mackies around the Bay and people have been catching plenty of kahawai and john dory too. If you’re happy to go out in these cooler mornings, the fishing really is going well.”
The MBGFC Snapper Tournament will be held on Saturday this week (4 June). The entry fee is $20 per angler. “All money will be returned as cash prizes,” says Alan. An additional sweepstake will also be run. To enter costs $25 per boat with the winner taking all.
The tournament prize-giving will take place in the MBGFC clubrooms on Saturday at 6:30pm. Entry forms are available from the MBGFC clubrooms or at mbgfc.co.nz.
