Exciting plans for a heritage centre in Tairua are gaining momentum, with an architect appointed for the project by Thames Coromandel District Council. The concept design phase is now underway and members of Tairua Heritage Society are responding with a series of fundraising events.
These will be held at Tairua Bowling Club from November 17 – 20, with cooking personality, Jo Seagar, as a special guest.
Thursday evening’s programme includes humorous skits plus dance demonstrations and songs from the 1920’s. The cost of $30 includes first drink and canapes. Those attending are invited to join in the fun by dressing up in the theme of that era.
The 1940’s will be celebrated in style on Friday, 18 November, with Jo Seagar hosting a dinner for 20 at Tairua’s Sunlover Retreat. This event has already sold out.The programme continues on Saturday, 19 November, with Jo Seagar hosting an old-fashioned afternoon tea. This includes an entertaining presentation and sample of her delicious recipes. Those attending can also enjoy a 1950’s recycled fashion parade. The cost is $50.
Events conclude with a Tairua Antiques Road Show featuring Vivian Leonard from Arkwright’s Antiques in Paeroa on Sunday, November 20. Vivian will talk about her experiences in the trade and give valuations of some of the items brought along. Afternoon tea will be provided by Tairua Heritage Society. The cost is $15.
Vice Chair/Secretary of the Society, Auriol Farquhar, says the aim is to create some sense of our history whilst having enjoyable experiences and raising money towards the very worthwhile cause of establishing a heritage centre in Tairua.
“The society is very grateful to all those involved in these events, especially Jo Seager and Vivian Leonard. There are still tickets available for some events, so come and join in the fun.”
