Mayor Len opens restored building at Coro Museum

A beautifully restored ‘dairy’ was officially opened at the Coromandel School of Mines and Historic Museum on Sunday 22 October by Mayor Len Salt

Fir Lawn house was built for Frederick Woollams in 1871, there were a number of ancillary structures on the property including a ladies tea house, stables, the dairy and a toilet with 2 or 3 seats side by side. The Fir Lawn property has had a few owners and in 1976 /77 the Turner family gave the dairy to the Olliff family on condition that it was restored. The restored dairy became a spa room at the Colonial Cottage Motel. When the dairy / spa was no longer needed, it was offered to the museum. The dairy is a listed with Heritage New Zealand and after many phone calls and consultations, the Museum got the approval to relocate the building. A time capsule was made up and is under the floor. Now it is beautifully restored for the public to enjoy.

“The afternoon opening the ‘dairy’ was fantastic; everything went to plan,” said Judy Bronlund, museum volunteer and Museum committee member.

The Museum is located 841 Rings Road Coromandel and open seven days from 1.00pm – 4.00pm.
