MBAS produces Pride and Prejudice for Mercury Bay.

Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 novel of manners by Jane Austen. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of the book, who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness.

When the senior drama class learned early this year that the school would not be able to put on a production due to financial constraints, Jade Fisher and Violet Robinson decided to find a way around this dilemma.

They were advised that if they produced a script over 100 years old, then copyright costs would not apply. This was good news and so they found something they liked, allay with real dramatic potential and which was a manageable project considering they are Year 13 students.

Now they are hard at work rehearsing. The Thames dramatic Society has generously loaned them the period costumes. This was such a boost for Jade and Violet considering the quality and authenticity of these costumes.

A little about the plot of this production:

The Bennet family live at their Longbourn estate, situated near the village of Meryton in Hertfordshire, England. Mrs Bennet's greatest desire is to marry off her five daughters in order to secure their futures. The arrival of Mr Bingley, a rich bachelor who rents the neighbouring Netherfield estate, gives her hope that one of her daughters might contract an advantageous marriage, because "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife".
