Beryl Riley - Coromandel’s Labour Candidate

100% renewable electricity generation by 2030

  • Labour will bring forward the target of 100 percent renewable electricity generation five years to 2030 with a review at the 2025 emissions budget.

  • $70m to accelerate a potential dry year storage solution, such as pumped hydro at Lake Onslow.

  • Accelerate electrification of transport and industrial sectors.

  • Further investing in emerging technologies, such as green hydrogen, to position New Zealand as a world leader in renewable energy.

  • Continuing to make energy more affordable for all New Zealanders.

  • Investment in renewable energy is also jobs rich. Our plan will creating new jobs and develop the high skill workforce our future economy needs to thrive.

I pledge to be a strong advocate for Coromandel’s economic, social, creative, and environmental future:

§ Helping families in need through this cost-of-living crisis and creating new trade deals to ensure our economy keeps growing,

§ Improving health and education outcomes for everybody and addressing child poverty,

§ Safeguarding our natural resources and tackling climate change, especially regarding adverse weather events,

§ Promoting best practice in policing and justice sectors,

§ Championing local tourism.

§ Developing job / business opportunities by promoting innovation and building infrastructure (e.g., roading, housing, and public projects).

I want my children and grandchildren to have a prosperous and sustainable future in Aotearoa / New Zealand. But I know that to create this positive future we must act courageously to stop the gap widening between rich and poor and to save our planet from the ravages of global warming.

National launched its "Back Pocket Boost" policy at Parliament on Wednesday, promising tax cuts, paid for with a combination of new taxes and cuts to public spending.

Their estimates have been described as "cautious and consistent" and the total level of savings - even combined with those outlined by Finance Minister Grant Robertson earlier in the week - "possible and plausible". Below are finer details on the plans and how much each policy will cost. Costings below are expressed over four years, unless otherwise stated.

Income relief

The plan includes several tax cuts, credits and rebates aiming to boost New Zealanders' after-tax incomes, expected to cost a total $14.6 billion over four years.

1)Tax bracket adjustments at a cost of more than $8.9b:

Superannuation payments are also indexed to after-tax average wages, which means NZ Super would be expected to increase by $680 a year or $26 a fortnight.

2)Independent Earner Tax Credit will be extended. Currently it gives people earning between $24,000 to $44,000 a year access an extra before-tax income of $10 a week. The amount reduces by 13 percent for those earning between $44,000 and $48,000.

National proposes to increase the upper limit of eligibility rising from the current $48,000 income, to $70,000, with amounts reducing from $66,000+ instead of $44,000+.

The party expects this will benefit 380,000 New Zealanders and would cost $707m.

3) The already announced Family Boost policy, which would give a rebate for childcare costs, worth up to $150 a fortnight. Those on higher incomes would get a smaller rebate, with the amount reducing to $112.50 a fortnight for joint household incomes of $150,000; $75 for incomes of $160,000, and $37.50 a fortnight for $170,000 incomes.

It estimates this will benefit an extra 130,000 households and would cost $996m.

4) This is via Working for Families, with the in-work tax credit increasing from $72.50 a week to $97.50. This would cost $1.4b, and is the same amount as the increase Labour has promised.

“Coromandel MP, Scott Simpson, says local people will benefit from having more of their own dollars in their own back pockets with this policy. People around the Coromandel know they can trust National with the economy. It’s been a tough couple of years for many people in our region and weather events have only made thing even more challenging. Focusing on rebuilding our economy and reducing the cost of living means more Coromandel people can get ahead.”

Caleb Ansell – Coromandel’s NZ First Candidate.

Q. What got you interested and committed to politics?

A. What got me interested and committed to politics comes from my younger years. I have always been a passionate Kiwi, advocating for our nation from my time in primary school. As an adult, I see a burgeoning need for New Zealanders who love their country and love their neighbourhoods to step up and show a better way forward for our little slice of Paradise. This is true for the Coromandel, especially as we move on from the natural disasters that have so plagued us. New Zealand First offers leadership based on real life experience, that can be implemented in a realistic way. This has the potential to create a better way forward for our beautiful area.

Q. What are the best of NZ FIRST policies that will work for people of the Coromandel Peninsula?

A. Our Ministry for Energy is the best policy. This could create a future where no matter what happens, we have the ability to keep functioning as a nation and we are able to more quickly respond to disasters and other adverse events. This means we could be energy independent, bringing down the cost of energy and living for all. This is a better way forward for Coromandel. This is especially important to me on a personal level, also. I would also add that our anti co-governance policy is something that is a great step forward to a better future. We simply see all people as equal, no matter colour, creed or ethnicity. No one single racial group should have an unequal amount of influence and support from the government.

Q. What is the hardest policy to sell but one which you think we need?

A. The most difficult but necessary policy to have is: "New Zealand First is going to restore education and stop indoctrination by removing gender ideology from the curriculum, especially from primary school." We have children learning things that are NOT the role of the school to teach, nor are these topics useful for the development of the academic careers of children, We must secure a future that teaches kids facts of life, sciences and the three R's, (being Reading wRiting and aRithmetic) as well an education free of political correctness and social indoctrination. We must let kids be kids.

Q. Why do you think it is that Coromandel has been a safe seat for national and not other t parties??

A. The Coromandel electorate has had a variety of MPs over the years. The people in the electorate voted for the person and party they felt best represented them and they will do so again this election. I can and will NOT personally speculate for the electorate. My hope now is that the voters now choose the right party for the job, which is New Zealand First.

Q. What has changed in the people’s hearts and minds or what do you perceive has changed?

A. People have felt as if their own government has overstepped the boundary as a result of the COVID19 lockdowns and traffic light system. There is a mood across the land that we must have more government accountability, more transparency and more openness. People want to know what their elected representatives are doing with their time and taxpayer’s dollars. People also want to be able to afford the cost of living and they don't want to be hamstrung by massive inflation. Our citizens are right to expect these things. They can expect to receive these things from New Zealand First.

Q. What are the strengths of NZ FIRST in this whole matter of improving the quality of life for New Zealanders?

A. New Zealand First is all about improving the lives of New Zealanders. Our energy policy, GST policy, our funding policy for St John, Gumboot Day, Plunket, Westpac Rescue Helicopters and Surf Life Saving New Zealand, our tax policies regarding adjustment relative to inflation and tax incentives to add value to the economy and our policy to fund residential care for the aged. We are seeking the best outcome for Kiwis, and we believe these policies are the right course of action.

It is vital that this year, people vote with the long term in mind. Our nation has been a world leader in the past and there is no reason to not be a world leading nation once more. New Zealand First is working towards that goal, through common sense and realistic policy rationale. We know what potential is out there in New Zealand and we want to unleash that potential into the world. Our electorate has been through a lot recently, now it is time to set ourselves up for success; To vote New Zealand First is a vote for the future of our great nation and beautiful electorate, a vote for democratic integrity, a vote for national unity and an end to racial division, a vote for a secure energy sector and a vote for the end of government overreach.

Party vote New Zealand First.
