Seth leads great scooter competition

Story and photos by Stephen Holmes.

The Whitianga Skate Park was the centre of a very successful scooter completion on the Saturday of the long weekend, gathering an audience of about 150 as well as scooter contestants. Local scooter champion, Seth Smith, 16 years, was the key organiser. There were five age levels of entrants and each entrant needed to perform two runs of 45 seconds in which he/she could demonstrate their many tricks. “Those tricks were creative and clever and, in many cases, of a high standard,” said one of the parents.

Seth who has won placement in a number of world championships, commentated on each contestant’s tricks to the audience. It was a very successful event, with all the proper rules in place and to be sure, will take place again.

Seth was very keen to thank the sponsors - Whiti Deals on Wheels and Coast to Coast Scaffolding Whitianga who supplied the tiered seating and chain fencing. This was an event enabled by funds from Mercury Bay Business Association as part of the cyclone recovery funding made available to Coromandel communities.

Thank you to the Judges: Kevin Smith and Riley Deakin
