Showtime 7 May!

By Sue Greig.

Excitement is building up as the members of The Mercury Bay Community Choir prepare for their upcoming concert, 'It's Showtime! "to be held at The Whitianga Town Hall on Sunday 7th May

at 2 pm.

Under the guidance of talented, vivacious choir director Kate Nielsen, the choir will perform a diverse collection of songs with a focus on screen and stage songs. Musical offerings range from the old classic Summertime {Porgy and Bess 1934] to Adele's Skyfall {2012} and a sprinkle of Beatles thrown in.

And if you hadn't noticed May 7th is also Mother's Day- what a perfect gift, an afternoon of music followed by a lavish afternoon tea provided by the choir. Cash only door sales. Adults $15, students $10, children free.

The choir, like so many others, was affected by the arrival of the pandemic on our shores. Cancelled or postponed concerts, and limited ability to meet or practise. This concert will be a landmark for the choir- their first open to the public concert since 2019.

If you think you would like to try out singing with a choir but worry that you can't sing or aren't good enough, here are some useful facts.

Studies have shown that only a very small percentage of people are truly tone deaf. With support, the majority of people can find their voice. Singing in choirs has also been shown to reduce the risk of dementia, improve memory and have positive effects on mental wellbeing.

This choir with its supportive culture is open to all - no previous singing experience is required.
