Students organise Whiti Food Fest

Students organise Whiti Food Festival Sunday 23 October

There will be local food stalls offering a variety of tastes catering for afternoon grazing and dinner; craft stalls by local artists and some from further afield in the North Island; MBAS students showcasing their business products and samples; live local music and entertainment, and fun activities for younger kids; all in a festive atmosphere.

This is the Whiti Food Festival organised by four Year 12 students from Mercury Bay Area School. It has been a mountain of planning and preparation and is all part of their Business Course undertaking. The heroes of this story are Luscha McMiken, Georgia Litherland, Elise Reader and Josie Fairweather. No doubt they have gone the extra mile to organise the Food Festival as their project, and to work on all aspects of it as a team. Now it’s nearly upon them and they are inviting their community to come and taste and enjoy the product of their endeavours. What they have ready for everyone sounds fantastic!

All the girls have enjoyed the project, but found it challenging. Josie says, “We had to keep on top of the external communication, eg contacting the exhibitors and advertising, and that was quite difficult. Just checking and replying to emails has been crucial in organising the event, with hundreds of people we are emailing or talking to, it can be quite hard to maintain. We had only three periods a week of business class time for this project, and of course we knew we would need to spend much more time on it as well as making sure we succeeded in our other subjects.”

Luscha adds, “It’s great to do this on a long weekend, so people can enjoy their Sunday night, with Monday being a holiday.”

The girls recommend, in fact, they ask that people bring cash, as eftpos use will be limited.

The Food Festival takes place from 4pm to 8pm in Memorial Park, in front of the town Library right in the centre of Whitianga. Parking spaces are not plentiful, so parking just outside the town centre is recommended. See you there!

This dynamic committee wishes to thank their sponsors: All about Whitianga, CFM, Firefly Design, Mercury Bay Area School and The Informer.

Whiti Food Festival 4.00pm – 8.00pm Sunday, 23 October.
