Tairua - a terrific time on the long weekend.

Once the All Blacks had thrashed the Pumas in the Rugby World Cup on Saturday, Tairua holiday-makers wandered to the town centre to browse and enjoy other activities.

The sound of sizzling mussel fritters and lots of stalls attracted crowds to Tairua township. Firemen’s Craft Market, which was held at the Tairua Fire Station. Proceeds supported the local fire brigade.

Tairua Writers’ Group readings were held at Tairua Library and included readings by children’s authors, Jenny Healey and Jeanine Stanley.

Tairua Community Hall was the venue for Tairua Art Group’s art exhibition, which was part of the Tairua Creatives Weekend. Eight local artists held Open Studios around the town. Those taking part were Jean McCann, Michael Harrison, Reina Cottier, Susan Dunster, Leanne Irvine, Jennifer Panther, Junko Hooper and Christine McGrath. Wood Bay Studio and The Little Gallery were also open.

At The Old Mill Waterfront Café, diners enjoyed a High Tea as well as talks from author Keli Jones and café owner and chef, Nigel Fenton-Lee.

Boaties took the opportunity to get out on the calm water and remind themselves that being in Tairua is being in paradise.
