Upcoming hunting competition to boost Hikuai School funds.

There will be keen competition as well as fun and prizes for all ages at Hikuai School Hunting Competition on the weekend of June 23 – 25.

This year, the organisers have added snapper to the list of bounty, to ensure hunters of all ages have a chance at winning a big prize. And for the first time there is a ladies category for the biggest boar. There is around $15,000 worth of prizes and cash in the prize pool, the biggest yet.

Weigh-in is Sunday, 25 June from 12 – 2.00pm at Hikuai School, followed by prize giving. Spectators are welcome to turn up from midday Sunday and enjoy the rural community atmosphere. This includes music from local artist Johnny Mason, entertainment, food and drinks as well as games and activities for the children. Raffles and spot prizes will add to the family fun day.

One of the organisers, Kristy Ralls, says the event is a big occasion on the school’s calendar and aims to boost funds already raised for relining of the school pool and replacement of a large shade sail.

“These are both important resources that we want to make sure are looked after and maintained for our tamariki and future pupils. We are determined to continue raising funds to complete these projects, which are costing more than originally estimated.

“We have a lot of keen hunters in the area and have added a snapper category to the kids and adults section in order to expand our competition. It promises to be bigger and better than before and we’re very excited about it.”

Entry fee is $50 adults, $10 children under 12.

Adult categories are: - best hooks, average weight, mystery weight, biggest boar (1st, 2nd and 3rd), most possums and heaviest snapper (new). Women’s heaviest boar (new).

Children’s categories are: - rabbit, magpie, possum and hare, heaviest snapper (new) and mystery weight snapper (new).

There will be a barbecue and burgers for all entrants. Entries close midnight Wednesday June 21.

There is even a possum plucking demonstration so you can see how the fur is harvested.

The competition will be on rain, hail or shine and is sure to be a fun day out.
