The Whitianga Toy Library held a super flea market on Saturday at the Whitianga Town Hall. There was a host of stall holders who had accepted the Toy Library’s invitation to bring their goods for sale – clothing (baby, children’s’ and adult), a range of bags and wallets and cup holders of cloth and leather, books, lots of bric a brac, raffles to support Playcentre and Bellyful Whitianga. Richard Neighbours or otherwise Richie, the balloon maker of amazing shapes was surrounded by children eagerly waiting for their requested shape as was Matilda, The Time Travelling Fairy for face-painting. Jeanette Gollogly and her daughter Emma, mother of three boys (soon to be four), had a very interesting array of Spanish and international, almost antique baby clothes, exquisitely made. Nadine Schwenke of Slice Slice Baby, was there with her sister and father and an array of household goods and clothing of good quality. Shannon Molloy, the co-ordinator of the Toy Library Flea Market and toy fair, seemed very pleased with the busyness and the amount and variety of goods for sale for this, their fundraiser project. “We have sold a lot of toys and also quite a lot of home decorations. There is such a variety of clothing and it’s quality clothing, for parents and children. It is a smart thing to do to buy second hand for children.” The industry and engagement of families to raise funds for facilities and resources to serve the community’s children, is strong in Mercury Bay. It’s not just the retired age group who are committed to these great causes. However, several grandparents were seen on Saturday involved in assisting their children and grandchildren at the stalls.
The Toy Library in 2 Cook Street, Whitianga is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 12.30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. They welcome new members and volunteers.
